No more jet fighters at Thunder City

Friday, October 8th, 2010

We, jet fighter lovers, have been really saddened by the news that Thunder City is shutting its jet fighter ride operations. Mike Beachy Head, CEO of Thunder City, announced earlier this month that due to the uncertain economic climate, they had to shut the operations down. It is truly a shame as Thunder City has been one of the few active operators worldwide to promote the extraordinary experience of flying a jet fighter. Established in 2000, Thunder City was – still is – one the most extensive collection of jet fighters in the world: 13 jets, including the Electric Lightning, Hawker Hunter, Bae Buccaneer and Jet Provost.

Your traditional sortie would get you buzzing with adrenaline. Over the past decade, Thunder City has done about 2000 sorties, and many famous people including Princes, Sheiks and a Richard Branson have had the pleasure of flying with them. Although this is the end for fast jets, Thunder City will continue its work on the Puma refit and upgrade programs.

Fly the Hawker Hunter in South Africa

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Experience history and fly onboard the Hawker Hunter. With its clean lines, brilliant handling and excellent load carrying capacity, the classic Hunter was possibly the best transonic jet fighter and ground-support aircraft of its kind - and it was built in greater numbers than any other British aircraft of the post-war era. The Hunter formed the backbone of the Royal Air Force’s jet fighter squadron between 1954 and 1961 and remained in frontline service until the early seventies. It was only finally withdrawn from active service in 1995.

Regarded as the “Spitfire” of the jet age the Hunter is one of the most elegant combat aircraft ever to grace the skies; hence it is a favourite at air shows around the world. The Hunter is the ideal aircraft for extreme sorties or simply fast and gentle trips around the magnificent Cape coastline and its wine lands.

If you chose an aggressive aerobatic jet sortie, you’ll pull loops, rolls, barrel rolls, inverted flight, vertical manoeuvres and a host of other mind blowing manoeuvres – and you’ll come out of them hooked on ex-combat jets.

Course of the experience: You need to allocate 3 hours for the full experience. Arrive on site at 9H30, then:

- Pre-flight tour of the site, visiting the hangars and planes

- Then get onboard and catch your breath

Fly the Bae Buccaneer in Cape Town

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Experience some serious speed on board the British Aerospace Buccaneer. This tandem two seater aggressor is designed for low level, high speed attack. Powered by two Rolls Royce Spey non afterburning bypass turbofans, this awesome machine performs just below the speed of sound at zero altitude.

Feel the speed and the landscape evaporating in front of your eyes. Take off from the airport and scream out to sea at a speed of close to Mach – and just 50ft (15m) above the water: your ‘g’ limits and sortie profile are determined purely by your ability to handle them. Seated in the jet behind the pilot, you’ll be working with him to maximise your experience - whether it be an extreme adrenaline rush through the rugged Cape Swartland Mountains or a sortie along the dramatic Cape coast. This is one fighter jet experience you’ll never forget.

Electric Lightning, South Africa

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Experience climbing 50,000ft in just under a minute and feel the speed of Mach 2.0. Get on board the English Electric Lightning and admire the curvature of the earth. Fly the crème de la crème of jet interceptors and feel the gentle and smooth handling of the plane whilst you break the sound barrier. Not for the faint hearted, this experience is truly amazing. First an interceptor jet, the Electric Lightning has evolved beyond its initial role into a very capable striker and reconnaissance fighter. With a maximum altitude of 60,000ft and a maximum speed of Mach 2, the pilots have enjoyed the beautiful spectacle of seeing the curvature of the earth at supersonic speed.
