I was fortunate last week to be invited to fly the Alpha Jet. It is a fantastic plane, a jet trainer with a big canopy so you get a full view, very powerful, and very maneuverable. My friend Jeff flew me all around, and it was simply awesome. This jet is used in the US for military purpose, more particularly to test radars and other equipments. But the Alpha Jet is mostly used worldwide as a trainer. The aircraft was designed and built by the French Dassault with the German Dornier. They started working on the project in 1968 and developed the concept until the first aircraft took to the skies in 1973 for the test model, and then 79 for the real ones.

The Alpha Jet is quite easily recognizable, with the wings mounted on top. It is a very nice looking aircraft, and designed to be easy to fly. France and Belgium are still today, training new recruits on this jet fighter. I guess the plane got famous because it is used by the Patrouille de France, the French national display team, and they are showing every day how this jet is good. And I have to say it handles magnificently. The aircraft was designed for low altitude flying, and low speed, but also designed to turn quick. And this is exactly what it does.
Jeff has been kind enough to let me fly the plane for 30mn (of course he did take-off and land), but I truly enjoyed it. I have flown the L39 Albatros before, and many times, the Fouga Magister as well, and I have flown various warbirds as well. The Alpha Jet is truly of another world, with power and agility. I think this plane is the bridge between the low trainers, and the real stuff. In all cases it worked for me and I have fallen in love with a new plane. Unfortunately, it is not possible yet to fly the Alpha Jet freely, for fun flights, but this could change in the future as Jeff told me some French people are thinking about getting one over to France to do just that. We will keep you posted on this.
